I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Parking issues, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Local Priorities: School Parking and Road Safety
You told us that people were parking on pavements around local schools, forcing parents with prams, wheelchair users and other pedestrians into the road.
In response to these concerns, we will be carrying out patrols at schools across the area. To help keep everyone safe, please take note of the advice below.
+ Keeping Our Children Safe Around Schools
Inconsiderate and dangerous parking around our schools continues to be a concern and can put children, parents and other road users at risk.
We all want to keep our children safe when travelling to and from school, so please consider how you can help.
How Can You Help?
✅ Keep your speed down
✅ Turn your engine off and avoid unnecessary idling
✅ Leave enough space on the road for other vehicles to pass safely
✅ Ensure your child enters and exits the vehicle safely from the pavement side
✅ Check for pedestrians and cyclists before opening your vehicle door
✅ Leave enough room on pavements for pedestrians, pushchairs and wheelchair users
✅ Take extra care when reversing
✅ Never park on school zig-zag markings
Please Park Considerately
Congestion around schools is one of the main causes of dangerous and inconsiderate parking. Where possible, consider alternative ways of completing the school run, such as walking part of the journey or parking a little further away from the school and walking the remaining distance.
Please Keep Restricted Areas Clear
❌ School entrances and zig-zag markings
❌ Dropped kerbs
❌ Residents' driveways
❌ Opposite or within 10 metres of a junction, allowing children to see approaching vehicles and drivers to see children clearly
